Free Public Class: Major Definition

THIS WEEK’S CHOREOGRAPHER IS: SLICE

Paolo “P-Slice” Penala began his dance journey in 2004 mentored by Lyle Beniga at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

At UMBC he became a member of the official hip-hop dance team, Major Definition in its inaugural year. Originally starting as an alternate, he worked his way to become the Executive Director of Major Def for the 2008 – 2009 season leading the team in top 3 finishes all over the country, as well as booking exclusive exhibition events such as opening for the Jabbawockeez and performing at the historic Baltimore Hippodrome. He ended his Major Def career by placing 3rd at East Coast Dance Competition 2009 scoring just a few points behind ABDC’s Fr3sh and Rhythm City.

He graduated from UMBC with a B.A. in Economics and a minor in Music. During this time, he also backed singer Sarah Geronimo for her “In Motion” U.S. tour, and rap group SNRG. Additionally, he founded Big League Crew, a performance team representing the DMV region in the fall of 2010 serving as “Fat Slice”, the managing director.

He has had the opportunity of teaching and sharing choreography with multiple dance teams and crews all over the east coast including Kodachrome VA in 2009, and Potomac Talent in 2011.

While working as a dance teacher around the DMV, he is also currently dancing with Culture Shock, D.C. training not only as professional dancer, but also working as a mentor in their youth outreach program. As a youth mentor he currently travels to many D.C. area schools with Mama Lisa, teaching guest workshops and empowering youth through the power of music and dance. His current goals is to spread his continuing education of urban freestyle and choreography with all who wish to share in his journey. When he’s not dancing you can be sure to find him eating at any and all times.

Coming back to teach public class is one of his favorite things to do because it gives him the exercise he needs to stay in some sort of shape (as Slice considers round a good shape to be in) and considers himself Major Def’s number one fan!
